Everything you always wanted to know about getting a masage but were too afraid to ask
These are the potentially NSFW questions that a lot of people have about getting massages that we answer completly honestly
Do I have to get completely naked?
Absolutely not. This is probably the biggest misconception about massage therapy.
You undress only to your comfort level. Period.
The majority of clients leave their underwear on, and some women prefer to wear a bra or sports bra.
I can provide a high-quality massage even when you’re fully clothed, so what you wear matters a lot less than what goals you’re trying to achieve.
Unless you’re fully clothed, you’ll be professionally, securely, and conservatively draped during the entire massage, so only the area of your body being worked on is uncovered.
Will you be in the room while I undress?
No. I’ll step out and give you privacy to undress and get on the table.
When you’re ready and covered by the sheet/blanket, I’ll knock before coming back in.
What if I get sexually aroused, or get an erection?
This can happen involuntarily because of the nervous system, not because you’re doing anything wrong.
I will ignore it and continue to work in a strictly professional way, avoiding any areas that feel uncomfortable.
If you feel embarrassed, you can mention it briefly or simply focus on your breathing and relaxation.
What if I fall asleep, snore, drool, or my stomach growls?
All of that is completely normal in massage.
It usually means your body is relaxing, which is the goal.
You never need to apologize for snoring, drooling, or body noises.
What if I pass gas by accident?
Bodies do what bodies do, especially when they relax.
If it happens, I’ll just carry on as usual and won’t make a big deal out of it.
You don’t have to say anything unless you really want to.
What if I didn’t shave or I’m worried about body odor?
I’m not here to judge your grooming habits.
Hairy legs, stubble, or unshaven areas are totally fine; it will not make a single difference in your massage experiance.
If you’re coming from work or the gym, there is a shower ensuite a quick rinse or wipe before your massage, or even after if you want to wipe off any lotion or oil that remains.
Are you judging my body (weight, scars, acne, cellulite, feet, etc.)?
No. I work with all kinds of bodies, every day.
My focus is on muscles, joints, and helping you feel better, not on appearance.
Scars, stretch marks, cellulite, and “imperfect” feet are all completely normal.
Can I ask you not to touch certain areas?
Yes, absolutely.
You are always in charge of which areas are worked on: you can say no glutes, no abdomen, no feet, or anything else.
You can change your mind at any time during the session.
Do I have to talk during the massage?
No. I'ts your massage. You can talk as much or as little as you'd like; I’ll follow your lead.
The only time I’ll interrupt is to check on pressure or your comfort.
What if the pressure hurts or I don’t like something you’re doing?
Please tell me right away.
Adjusting pressure, technique, or focus area is a normal part of massage, not a complaint.
You can say things like, “Can you go lighter?” or “Could you spend more time on my neck?"
If there anywhere that I massage that makes you uncomfortable, tell me right away and I will avoid that area immediately and for the rest of the session.
You never have to explain why you might be uncomfortable, all you have to do is tell me you are uncomfortable.
What if I need to use the bathroom in the middle?
Just let me know and I’ll step out while you get off the table to use the private facilities.
We’ll pause the session and then restart when you’re back and comfortable.
You never have to lie there in discomfort.
Is it okay to come if I’m on my period?
Yes, as long as you feel comfortable.
Many people actually find massage very helpful for menstrual cramps and tension.
You can wear your usual menstrual product and we can adjust positioning if needed.
What if I don’t like the therapist’s vibe or don’t want to come back?
You never have to rebook with someone you don’t feel comfortable with.
Your safety and comfort matter more than sparing our feelings.
Will you comment on my medical issues, scars, or skin problems?
I may ask questions only when it’s relevant to your safety and treatment.
Otherwise, I won’t comment on your body beyond what I need to know to work safely and effectively.
You’re welcome to share as much or as little personal detail as you like.
Can I keep some clothing on or get a massage over my clothes?
Yes.
We can absolutely do a modified session with you in comfortable clothing, focusing on areas we can access (like shoulders, neck, hands, feet, or over-the-clothes work).
Just tell me your comfort level and we’ll adapt.
What if I get emotional or start crying?
Massage can release stored tension and emotions, and crying on the table is more common than people think.
You don’t have to explain or apologize; I’ll give you space, tissues if you want them, and a calm, nonjudgmental presence.
You can talk about it or stay quiet. Either is okay.
